CONCORD, N.H. — The interim head of New Hampshire’s state-run psychiatric hospital says the facility has the strongest team of psychiatrists, medical doctors and nurse practitioners it has had in decades.

Donald Shumway took over at New Hampshire Hospital last month, when the chief executive was forced out in a contract dispute. The state contracts with the Dartmouth-Hitchcock health system to provide services at the psychiatric hospital, but it had been providing fewer psychiatrists than specified.

Shumway told Gov. Chris Sununu and the Executive Council on Wednesday that Dartmouth-Hitchcock will be in compliance in terms of psychiatrists next week, and that while some other staffing holes remain, they are not high priorities to him. He says the contract is working well and that Dartmouth-Hitchcock workers are a highly respected and skilled team.
