CASPER, Wyo. — A University of Wyoming assistant professor has pleaded not guilty to possession of child pornography.

Jian Cai is accused of possessing digital images depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. He entered his plea Monday in federal court.

KTWO-AM in Casper reports (bit.ly/2r5uJgF) that charging documents show an investigation into Cai began on Feb. 14. Agents with the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation were able to determine that a computer belonging to Cai had downloaded pornographic images depicting children.

Cai is currently out on bail. His trial is set for July 17 before U.S. District Judge Nancy Freudenthal.

UW spokesman Chad Baldwin said Cai has been placed on administrative leave without pay.

Cai is an assistant professor of mechanical engineering.
