ROME — Southern club Benevento beat Carpi 1-0 in a playoff Thursday to win promotion into Serie A for the first time in its 88-year history.

Romanian forward George Puscas, who is on loan from Inter Milan, scored in the 32nd minute by redirecting a cross.

The first leg ended 0-0 and Benevento could have won even with another draw, since it finished ahead of Carpi in the standings.

Ferrara-based SPAL and Hellas Verona had already been promoted.

Benevento beat Spezia and Perugia in the previous rounds of the playoffs after finishing the regular season in fifth place.

It’s the second consecutive promotion for Benevento, which was playing in the third division last season.

Benevento is located near Naples.
