The Columbus Parks and Recreation Department kicked off its 60th anniversary celebration by honoring its past achievements and current staff, detailing future goals and hosting numerous activities for all ages.

1992

Mayor Robert Stewart announced Aug. 12 would be “Levi Bowers Day” after the 7-year-old Fodrea Community School student used techniques he learned watching television to save his friend, Zach Greenlee, 6, from choking on a piece of hard candy.

Indiana National Guard officials announced Bakalar Air Force Base would be headquarters for a nationwide military operation known as “Operation Guard Strike,” aimed at coordinating units of the National Guard in case of a national emergency.
