JERSEYVILLE, Ill. — A burglary suspect is dead and a southern Illinois police officer wounded after a shootout.

Jerseyville officers responded to a burglary alarm about 1 a.m. Tuesday at DJ’s Pub and Grill, which was closed. Police say a suspect ran and officers chased him.

Police say the suspect fired at an officer, who returned fire. Both men were struck several times.

The suspect died at a hospital. His name has not been released.

The officer is hospitalized in nearby St. Louis. Police say he was awake and alert when taken to the hospital, but details about his condition have not been released. The officer has worked in Jerseyville since 2014 and worked in St. Louis before that.

Illinois State Police are investigating.
