Mrs. Lucy Catherine Payton Thompson, 91, died Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Hanceville Nursing Home in Alabama. Lucy was the 10th child, born on July 26, 1925, to parents James Garfield and Ida Bell Crawford Payton.

She attended New Castle High School and Bradford High School. She worked for National Youth Association (NYA) while attending school to support her education. She worked for the Wagon Wheel Restaurant in Bedford, Kentucky. She also worked for the U.S. Army after she married Edward William Thompson. They were married on Aug. 12, 1947, while living at Fort Knox, Kentucky. She worked for Arvin Industries for 37-and-a-half years. Her last job was with Community Action in Cullman.

She had one son, Edward Ray Thompson. She was a member at West Side Baptist Church in Eva, Alabama. She was a member at Parkside Baptist Church of Columbus from 1968-2004.

She was preceded in death by her parents and all of her eleven siblings including four sisters, Annie Rodgers, Ray Bell Rodgers, Stella Suter and Jessie Lee Payton; and seven brothers, Jimmy, Bennie, Walter, Carl, William Earl, Crawford J. and Oldham Payton.

Survivors include her son, Edward (Evelyn) Thompson of Hanceville, Alabama; two grandchildren, Michele Dawn Thompson of Huntsville, Alabama and Kyle (Lauren) Thompson, also of Hanceville; three great-grandchildren, Madison Fowler, Ryan Fowler and Tara Thompson; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Myers-Reed Chapel. Burial will follow at Garland Brook Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, also at the funeral home.
