Brian’s picks – June 15

If you watch even one online clip of the urban, freestyle dance troupe known as the Groovaloos, you have to appreciate their energy and exuberance, if not their unabashed funk and style. The Los Angeles-based group will bring nine of its dancers here for the Columbus Area Arts Council’s free Live On the Plaza event at 7 p.m. June 16 at the Bartholomew County Public Library Plaza, 536 Fifth St. in Columbus. The performance, titled, “Find Your Groove,” will include ample audience interaction. Information: 812-376-2539 or artsincolumbus.org.

You can get into a bit of flag-waving fun a little early this year with an Old-Fashioned Independence Day Celebration beginning at 5 p.m. June 30 on the historic Hope Town Square. The event will feature games and contests, a decorated bike/trike parade for the youngsters up to age 12, cake walk, apple pie-baking contest, and fish fry and other activities. Plus, one of my favorite groups, the Banister Family Bluegrass Band (actually, they can play anything, and their set list often reflects that) will perform at 7:30 p.m. And, fireworks begin at dark.
