LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A former union president has been sentenced to 15 months in prison after allegedly embezzling more than $100,000.

Forty-seven-year-old Michael Bennett of Oxford also was sentenced to one year on probation Friday. The former president of United Auto Workers Local 2317 at Fairfield Manufacturing in Lafayette pleaded guilty last October to one count of wire fraud. A grand jury had indicted him last August on three counts each of wire fraud and theft of labor union assets.

The indictment alleged Bennett made out more than 170 union checks totaling more than $70,000 to himself and forged the signature of the local’s treasurer. He also allegedly rented out the union hall to other parties and did not report the revenue.
