Incident at electronics store results in 2 arrests

Two local men were arrested on charges including possession of a handgun by a serious violent felon after they were reported to be acting suspiciously inside a Columbus store.

Columbus police were sent to Best Buy, 1343 N. National Road, at 12:30 p.m. Saturday about a man wearing a mask who had a collapsible baton tucked into his waistband, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The man threw the mask on the floor when he was asked to remove it and walked to the back of the store with another man, Harris said. Officers located the two men and identified one of them as Ricky A. Schoonover, 29, of 724 Hutchins Ave., who had a warrant for his arrest, Harris said.

Officers found a small amount of marijuana and methamphetamine in one of Schoonover’s pant pockets and arrested him on preliminary charges of possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, an out-of-county warrant and a local warrant, Harris said. Schoonover is being held without bond in the Bartholomew County Jail, jail officials said.

Officers spoke to the other man, who gave a false name and reached for one of his back pockets while being patted down, Harris said. The man, later identified as Devin C. Kinman, 26, 11085 W. Georgetown Road, was placed in handcuffs and officers found a loaded handgun in one of his back pants pockets as well as the expandable baton, Harris said.

Kinman was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, false informing and a Bartholomew County arrest warrant, Harris said. He is being held without bond at the jail, jail officials said.
