Most athletes are always looking to get faster, no matter the sport, but MVP Sports Complex owner Dr. Nate Frasier is more concerned with the quickness than the overall top speed of the athlete.
“I believe in my heart the best part to teach is quickness,” Frasier said. “There are so many sports where you hardly ever get the chance to meet top speed unless you’re running track, but I really enjoy that first three, four-step explosion work. That’s what really creates the difference in an athlete.”
Fifteen high school and middle school athletes will be get the chance to learn from Frasier’s 2017 Summer Speed Camp starting Tuesday. Each session will last two hours starting at 12:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday for the next five weeks. The cost for the camp is $125 for all 10 sessions, ending on July 27.
The workshops will focus on a different components of running each week, starting with understanding why balance is important to the art of running. Frasier will add core work during the second week and explain how both balance and core work together simultaneously.
“I really enjoy the teaching portion,” Frasier said.”… If you can really break it down to a kid that really wants to get better, and he can put the idea in his head that this is why we do this and do that, you can get them to work out with a purpose rather than generically working all the time.”
The 15-person cap on the camp participants is to keep the camp small enough for Frasier to give enough hands-on instruction with each individual athlete. Columbus North assistant football coach Harvey Scruggs also will be helping out with the camp.
This will be Frasier’s first year running this particular camp, but said he has done things similar to this for the past eight years and plans on making the speed camp an annual event. All 15 spots have yet to be filled, and interested athletes can join by calling the MVP Complex or by registering online.
