Join in on free running training

Three times a week, free Mill Race Marathon training sessions have been underway since the end of May, but it’s not too late to join.

Training coordinator Alex Contreras leads sessions Saturday mornings and Tuesday and Thursday evenings. All are open to the public.

The Saturday sessions begin at 7 a.m. at YES Cinema and include classroom lessons through July 15. Remaining topics include The Training Effect, July 1; Cross Training and Core Strength, July 8; and Injuries and Injury Prevention, July 15. The classroom sessions will be followed by a group run at 7:30 p.m. Beginning July 22, the Saturday sessions will consist of running only.

The Tuesday sessions are speed oriented and begin at 7 p.m. at the Central Middle School track.

The Thursday sessions are tempo oriented and begin at 7 p.m. at Parkside Elementary. Runners meet in the school’s west parking lot and run on the People Trails.

Contreras said 60 to 70 people have been attending the Saturday morning sessions and about 20 have participated in the Tuesday and Thursday evening sessions.

The training program will continue through the week before the Sept. 23 Mill Race Marathon, half-marathon and 5K.

“Twelve weeks is still time for people to get in good condition,” Contreras said.
