Magdala Newsom

Columbus

Magdala Thomas Newsom, 85, of Columbus, passed from this life at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Maggie was born June 10, 1932, in Lafayette, Indiana, to Doctor Gordon and Lucille Thomas. One of Maggie’s fondest and lasting memories as a child was her family’s passion for thoroughbred horses that included showing them in Indiana and surrounding states.

Maggie graduated from Purdue University and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She then married the love of her life, Hugh Newsom, and moved to Columbus with their daughter.

Being an active member of her community was an important part of Maggie’s life. A few of the organizations that benefited from her service are the Visitors Center Gift Shop, the Distinguished Visitor Series, Tri Kappa, Harrison Lakes Country Club, Bartholomew County Library, Garland Brook Cemetery Board and Whip-Poor-Will and Let’s Grow Garden Clubs.

Faith was a constant in her life as expressed through her worship and activities at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter, and is survived by two daughters, Laura Deily (Steven) and Marylu Kosiarek (Mark), and her brother, Michael Thomas. Maggie was also blessed with four granddaughters, Katherine and Anna Deily and Jennifer and Lauren Kosiarek.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church with Father Martin Peter officiating.

Family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to time of service Friday at the church.

Private burial will follow at Garland Brook Cemetery.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or St. Bartholomew Catholic School.
