Madison Regatta returns for 67th year on river

The annual Madison, Indiana, Regatta returns this weekend for its 67th year of activities on or near the Ohio River.

This year, four H1 Unlimited Hydroplane boats will be paired up in a series of dual heats leading to a winner-take-all final heat. Grand Prix West will also put on a full race with at least 10 boats competing.

The boat-racing action opens Friday with testing runs between noon and 4 p.m. Heat racing is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday’s racing schedule concludes with the Grand Prix World Final at 2 p.m. and the H1 Unlimited Indiana Governor’s Cup at 3 p.m.

Non-racing activities include Friday’s Music on the River from 5 p.m. to midnight and the 7 p.m. Madison Regatta Parade along Main Street from Jefferson to Cragmont streets. Saturday’s schedule includes music in Bicentennial Park from 5 to 11 p.m. and fireworks at 10 p.m.

The parade and fireworks are free. Most other events require wristband admission.

Madison is about an hour and 15 minutes south of Columbus.
