Man survives close encounter with lightning

Lightning struck just feet away from a 68-year-old local man Tuesday morning as severe thunderstorms blanketed the area.

Bill McClain said he was walking east on State Road 46 around 10:30 a.m. when he heard “a loud boom” and saw a white flash. The next thing McClain said he remembers is being on the ground.

Columbus police and firefighters were called to the incident just outside the McDonald’s restaurant at 2205 W. Jonathan Moore Pike near Interstate 65.

“I feel like my batteries have been charged like the Energizer bunny,” McClain joked. “All my muscles contracted and I will be extremely sore. I’m already sore.”

Fire department emergency medical technicians and ambulance personnel who were sent to the scene urged McClain to go to the hospital for further examination, but he declined.
