COLUMBUS, Indiana –A fire broke out in a second-floor scrapbooking area of a downtown home, resulting in an estimated $100,000 in damage, firefighters said.

Columbus Fire Department firefighters fought heavy smoke and intense heat Saturday afternoon at the home at 1118 Lafayette Ave., where Chris and Misty McCawley live with three children, fire investigator Matt Noblitt said.

The family was not home when firefighters arrived about 3 p.m. and the family’s four dogs and three cats were accounted for, Noblitt said.

Twenty-three firefighters and support from Columbus Police Department and Columbus Regional Hospital ambulance responded to the scene. The fire’s cause is undetermined, he said.
