ROANOKE, Va. — A Virginia man has been convicted of killing his girlfriend’s 5-month-old nephew while he was babysitting the infant.

The Roanoke Times reports that 23-year-old Mikeal Sardarov pleaded no contest to second-degree murder on Monday. Sardarov entered the plea just as his trial was about to start.

A judge found Sardarov guilty of killing Liam Fink, who died in February 2016 after suffering injuries while Sardarov was babysitting him.

Prosecutors say Liam was found not breathing and died later at a hospital. According to prosecutors, a medical examiner found Liam’s skull had been fractured.

Liam was the nephew of Ashley Adair, whom Sardarov was dating and later married.

Sardarov faces up to 40 years in prison at sentencing in October.
