MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A West Virginia county commissioner who authorities say crashed his car while driving under the influence has been arrested.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that Ed Hawkins was arrested and charged with DUI and speeding. Hawkins is president of the Monongalia County Commission.

According to a criminal complaint, Hawkins crashed his car into a guardrail Sunday night. A deputy smelled alcohol and noticed Hawkins’s bloodshot eyes. Hawkins told authorities that he drank two glasses of wine about an hour before the crash.

Authorities say Hawkins refused to take a breath test.

A judge arraigned Hawkins and released him on a personal recognizance bond Monday. Hawkins did not respond to a request for comment.
