FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police in North Carolina are trying to find a woman who disappeared after she was shot multiple times, and her ex-husband is facing a number of charges in the incident.

The Fayetteville Observer reports 28-year-old Jimmy Lee Proffitt II of Hope Mills faces charges ranging from first-degree kidnapping to attempted first-degree murder.

Police told a news conference on Wednesday that Proffitt kidnapped 28-year-old Heather Carter after she was shot on July 12. She hasn’t been seen or heard from since. Authorities said 29-year-old Ashley Davila also was shot, but managed to drive away. Investigators said Carter wasn’t able to get into the car.

Sgt. Pedro Orellano said detectives have evidence that Carter was seriously injured, specifically a significant amount of her blood at the crime scene and in Proffitt’s car.
