COLUMBIA, S.C. — A man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison in the 2015 shooting death of an aspiring South Carolina teacher.

Local media outlets report 47-year-old Ibin Patterson was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to charges including murder.

Patterson was arrested last year in the 2015 shooting death of Timothy Gentry. Authorities say the 32-year-old died after being shot in the chest.

Police linked Patterson to the case after a gun he used days later when he robbed a women, then fired on officers, matched the bullet that killed Gentry.

Authorities say Gentry worked with children, did charity work overseas and wanted to be a teacher.
