CORTLANDVILLE, N.Y. — Authorities say two people are dead and seven others are hospitalized after the taxi van they were in crashed off a central New York road and slammed into a utility pole and a tree.

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office says the crash occurred around 3 a.m. Thursday on a road in the town of Cortlandville, 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Syracuse.

Deputies say the van veered off the road, then hit a pole and a tree. Police say the driver and one of the eight passengers were killed.

The seven other passengers were injured. Three have been taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, while the other four are being treated at Cortland Regional Medical Center. Information on their conditions hasn’t been released.
