Police: 2 arrested in storage unit burglary

Two people were arrested on charges of burglary and theft after they were caught by Columbus Police officers inside a local storage unit.

Columbus police were sent to Storage Express, 170 15th St. at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a suspicious person with a bag walking around the business, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Officers found an unattended vehicle in the area and saw a person with a flashlight inside the property, Harris said. Officers also found a large hole had been cut in the chain-link perimeter fence and noted a security camera had been moved, Harris said. They also heard people talking inside a storage unit, he said.

After some time, the storage unit door opened and the two people inside — identified as Jeremiah W. Clark, 31, Franklin, and Cheryl L. Bailey, 30, Edinburgh — were arrested on the burglary and theft charges, Harris said.

Officers contacted the storage unit owner and determined that the locks had been removed and no one had permission to be inside, Harris said.

Clark and Bailey are being held at the Bartholomew County Jail on a 48-hour hold, jail officials said.
