MILFORD, Conn. — Authorities say a man remains missing after he was swept off a sandbar while attempting to walk to Charles Island.
The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s environmental conservation police on Saturday identified the missing man as 28-year-old George Swaby of Bridgeport.
Police say Swaby and two other people had been walking on the sandbar Friday that leads to the island off Silver Sands State Park in Milford when a wave forced two of them into Long Island Sound.
Police say a boater reported that two men were in the water and in distress. The boater rescued one man but Swaby couldn’t be located.
Crews searched for Swaby on Friday evening and Saturday morning. The Milford Fire Department said Saturday afternoon that it has officially suspended its search efforts.
