SPRINGVILLE, Ala. — Alabama officials are investigating after an inmate was found dead inside a cell at a state prison.

News outlets report officers at St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville found the inmate dead on the floor Saturday. The Alabama Department of Corrections said it has placed the prison on lockdown while it conducts an investigation.

The agency identified the inmate as 33-year-old Joseph Michael Wood. He was serving a life sentence after being convicted of first-degree robbery in Houston County in 2011.

Corrections officials said county coroner will determine the cause of Wood’s death.
