BRENT, Ala. — Authorities say an Alabama prison guard is in stable condition after he was stabbed by an inmate during lunch.

Alabama Department of Corrections spokesman Bob Horton said 36-year-old Wendell Tyrell Jones used a makeshift weapon to stab the guard from behind Monday in the dining hall at Bibb County Correctional Facility.

Al.com reports authorities said the guard managed to defend himself until backup arrived and he could be taken to a hospital. Corrections officials did not immediately say what might have motivated the attack.

Jones is serving a 20-year sentence for a 2011 domestic violence conviction out of Marengo County. The wounded guard’s name was not immediately released.
