BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — An Alabama woman has been found stabbed to death in her home.

AL.com reports that 57-year-old Vergil Angela Cook was found dead Friday night. Birmingham police said it appeared that she had been dead for several days.

The body was discovered by Cook’s daughter, 35-year-old YiKoia Cook, who had raised concerns when she hadn’t heard from her mother in a few days. Police initially said it appeared the death was a result of natural causes. In a press release, police said the victim may have known the attacker.

YiKoia Cook said that her mother’s death is the second murder in the family in two years, after Vergil Cook’s brother, 62-year-old Otis Tyrone Cook, was shot by his neighbor during a dispute over his niece playing in that neighbor’s yard.
