PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Police say two men were hospitalized after an exchange of gunfire following a car crash in Rhode Island.

Police say the car crash happened just before 5 p.m. Sunday in Providence. The two drivers involved were exchanging information when a third vehicle drove by and began shooting.

Providence police say passengers in one of the cars involved in the crash returned gunfire, and one was shot and seriously injured.

Police found the driver of the vehicle that began the gunfire nearby, who was also shot and seriously injured.

Both of the men have been hospitalized and are reported in stable condition.

Police say the shooting is still under investigation.
