JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. — Officials say a body matching the description of an 11-year-old girl has been recovered from a South Carolina coastal river.

St. John’s Fire Marshal Ryan Kunitzer said the girl was swimming near a sandbar when she was swept away Sunday evening. Searchers found her body around 12:30 p.m. Monday a short distance down the Stono River.

Kunitzer said at a news conference that the Charleston County Coroner’s Office is working to confirm the girl’s identity and determine how she died.

Authorities say the girl was out with her family boating in the area when she disappeared on the Stono River near the Limehouse Bridge on Johns Island.
