MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Tennessee prosecutor says no charges will be filed against two deputies who fatally shot a man last year.
Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich said Monday the deputies fired only after 48-year-old Jimmy Lee Lawson ran at them with a knife and refused to obey orders to drop the weapon and get on the ground.
Weirich said the deputies had only seconds to react and “had no other choice” but to shoot.
She says her decision was made after reviewing an investigative report on the shooting compiled by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
The deputies were responding to a domestic call at the home when the shooting occurred.
Lawson was white. Officials didn’t release the names and races of the deputies.
