CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Authorities say an off-duty Virginia police officer was killed when he was hit by a car while crossing the street.
Officials tell local news media outlets that 45-year-old Eddie Ufret died Saturday after he was struck while crossing the street with friends. Ufret had worked for the Chesapeake Police Department since 2014 and was off duty when he was killed.
News outlets report that the driver, William Johnson, has been charged with driving under the influence involuntary manslaughter. It wasn’t immediately clear Monday whether Johnson has an attorney.
WAVY-TV reports that a criminal complaint says the 72-year-old had a blood alcohol content of 0.07 two hours after the crash. Virginia’s legal limit is 0.08.
Chesapeake Police Chief Col. Kevin Wright says they’re deeply saddened by the loss of Ufret.
