NEW BERN, N.C. — Police say an 8-year-old North Carolina boy was hit by a train and is hospitalized with what authorities say is life-threatening injuries.

New Bern Police Lt. Doug Ipock told local media outlets that the boy and some other children were playing around the area of the train around 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

Ipock said the boy lives near the scene of the accident. The boy was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where he is listed in critical condition.

The New Bern Police Department is working with Norfolk Southern to determine the cause of the accident.
