ELIZABETH, N.J. — Authorities say a New Jersey police officer is accused of sexually assaulting a woman he first met while on duty.

Union County prosecutors say North Plainfield officer Mike Jean-Baptiste was taken into custody without incident on Monday. He was scheduled to make his initial court appearance Tuesday, and it wasn’t known if he’s retained an attorney.

Prosecutors say the 29-year-old Jean-Baptiste first encountered the woman while on duty in March, but did not provide further details. They say the alleged sex assault occurred later that night at a hotel in Kenilworth.

Jean-Baptiste could face up to 10 years in state prison if convicted.
