Pence coming to Indianapolis: Vice president will speak about combating gun violence

INDIANAPOLIS — Vice President Mike Pence will return to the Hoosier state next month as a guest at the Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition’s annual luncheon and reception.

The faith-based coalition, known for its work in combating gun violence in Indianapolis, announced Pence’s appearance Monday on its website. The luncheon is scheduled for Aug. 11 at the Indianapolis Marriott, located at 350 W. Maryland St.

Luncheon chairman Aaron Williams said he personally invited Pence, a long-time friend, to this year’s event.

“The most important piece is he gets it. He understands the work Ten Point is doing is a national issue,” Williams said.

During his term as Indiana governor, Pence participated in several Ten Point Coalition events, including peace walks through the streets of downtown Indianapolis. The former governor also honored Ten Point Coalition leader Rev. Charles Harrison in his final State of the State address last year.

“It’s a national issue of reducing youth violence and gun violence throughout the county,” Williams said. “It’s something that has to be talked about on a consistent basis and requires cooperation and collaboration from all stakeholders involved.”

The vice president, a native of Columbus, will speak during the event, which is open to the public.

Individual tickets, which include one seat at the luncheon, start at $250. Luncheon packages that include a private meet-and-greet with the vice president start at $10,000. Additional VIP ticket packages are available online and cost up to $25,000.

Williams said funds raised will support the coalition’s initiatives.

The full event schedule is still being firmed up, organizers said.
