SALEM, S.C. — Officials say someone stole solar panels from a county welcome sign in northern South Carolina.

Oconee County Sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Watt said someone reported the panels and the battery box they were attached to missing Sunday afternoon.

The “Welcome to Oconee County” sign is on state Highway 11 just over the Pickens County line.

Watt said in a news release the solar panels cost around $2,500.

Deputies don’t have a suspect or any motive for the theft.
