Suspect arrested after foot chase with police

A Columbus man who was wanted for arrest and led police on a foot chase is in jail on multiple arrest charges, police said.

Columbus police officer Skylar Berry attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle near Eighth and Pearl streets at about 8:50 p.m., Columbus Police Department spokesman Matt Harris said. The car’s passenger door opened as the vehicle slowed down and a man later identified as Derek B. Woodson, 39, 5213 Lamplight Drive, exited and began running on foot, he said.

Officer Tony Kummer observed Woodson running a short time later and began chasing the man on foot. Woodson continued running between houses in the 700 block of Pearl Street, where he was arrested, Harris said.

Woodson was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of:

  • Resisting law enforcement
  • Two Bartholomew County warrants
  • Possession of marijuana

Woodson is being held without bond, jail officials said.
