GLOBE, Ariz. — Gila County authorities say an elderly woman was washing dishes at her home when an unknown man assaulted her and caused her to miss her husband’s funeral the next day.

Gila County Sheriff’s Office Detective Keith Charles says authorities are still investigating the incident that drew a report over the weekend regarding an assault and burglary in an area outside of Globe.

Charles says deputies received a call about the incident just before 3 a.m. Saturday but the attack happened nearly four hours earlier. He says the man tapped the woman on the shoulder before hitting her head with a blunt object that made her fall on the floor.

Charles says the suspect who confronted the woman was a stocky man who was wearing a white ski mask.
