MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — A North Carolina man has been found dead in a house fire, prompting a search for a suspect.

The Surry County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Tuesday that a warrant has been issued for 29-year-old Matthew Ray Lawson, of Ararat, in connection with the Monday death of 27-year-old Nathan Cory Atkins.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports firefighters responding to a house fire on Starr Memory Trail on Monday morning found Atkins after the fire had been extinguished. Investigators determined that a car and a motorcycle had been taken from the scene.

The car was later found burned in Ararat, and the motorcycle was found in Mount Airy.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
