RENO, Nev. — The Washoe County School District is looking at bringing back retired employees amid a critical labor shortage in some subject areas.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports (http://on.rgj.com/2v8thAP ) the Washoe County School Board of Trustee authorized the school district to rehire retired employees that have been out of school for more than a year on Tuesday. The district needs more qualified applicants for special education, English language learners, secondary math, secondary science, early childhood education and industrial arts.

The district’s chief human resource officer says before they can bring on a retired employee, the school district must first exhaust every other option, such as filling positions with long-term substitutes. A rehired retiree may be able to receive a part of their retirement benefits on top of their salary.
