MADRAS, Ore. — Two wildfires burning near each other have scorched more than 7 square miles in Central Oregon.

KTVZ reports ( ) the blazes ignited Tuesday afternoon in grass and brush north of Madras. Crews worked to protect several homes from the flames while residents used garden hoses to protect their chickens.

Officials say the fires could merge and are being managed as one blaze.
