Train stops in time, avoiding crash with car on Columbus area tracks

COLUMBUS, Indiana — A woman who drove her car onto railroad tracks in Bartholomew County was arrested on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence.

Sheriff’s deputies responded at 10:29 p.m. Monday to a report of a vehicle on the railroad track at the intersection of W. County Road 550N and U.S. 31 North, sheriff’s department spokeswoman Judy Jackson said.

Deputies saw the vehicle on the track and a southbound train was approaching the location. Railroad officials were contacted and the train was stopped well short of the vehicle, Jackson said.

The driver, identified as Jennifer P. Grimes, 39, 2914 Traditions Court, Franklin, was found to be impaired with a breath alcohol-concentration level of .166 — more than double the state’s legal limit of .08 percent, Jackson said.
