ATHENS, Ala. — Three people have been arrested after a 27-year-old Alabama man was found dead in what police say was a robbery gone wrong.

News outlets report that 27-year-old Kandes Elizabeth Lambert, 22-year-old Terry Dale Amerson and 28-year-old Marty Stafford were charged Wednesday with capital murder and first-degree robbery in the Tuesday night death of Brenton C. Gatlin.

Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson says the suspects and victim knew each other. The shooting happened at Lambert’s home.

Johnson says the incident was drug- and money-related, and could have been relationship-oriented. He did not provide details about what happened at the home during the robbery and shooting or identify the shooter.

It’s unclear if Lambert, Amerson and Stafford have lawyers.

Gatlin was Athens’ first homicide victim in 2017.
