Guy Rex Cook

Guy “Rex” Cook, 78, of Columbus, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Rex was born February 25, 1939, in Columbus, and was raised in Clifford. He was the son of Hubert D. Cook and Mary Ellen Phares Cook. He was married to Peg Lienhoop Shireman on March 3, 2017.

He attended Clifford High School, graduating in 1957. After his graduation, he served in the Air Force Reserves. Rex was employed by Cummins Engine Company beginning in 1959. He attended Apprentice School for Tool Design and retired from Cummins after 45 years of employment. After retirement, Rex did contract Tool Design for Sterling Industries until October 2016. Rex also clerked for Wetzel Auction Service for more than 20 years. He served on the Clifford Volunteer Fire Department.

Rex enjoyed fishing, playing golf, going to horse races, playing cards and frying fish at Wetzel’s barn. He also enjoyed playing Senior Softball with the Silver Foxes of Shelbyville. Rex loved spending time with his many friends and he will be greatly missed by them all.

Rex was blessed with five grandchildren, Kade Cook, Conner Hayden, Zach Hayden, Willa Wetzel, and his best buddy, Lane Wetzel. Papaw enjoyed spending time with his buddies, especially the many trips they made to Rural King and Burger King.

Rex is survived by his wife, Peg Lienhoop Shireman-Cook; a son, Marc Cook of Hoot Owl Holler; daughters, Cinthia (Tony) Cook Johnson of North Vernon and Catherine Cook of Columbus; stepdaughters, Chari (Matt) Hayden of Hebron, IN, and Adelaide (Mike) Wetzel of Columbus; sister, Pam McNealy of Columbus; two nephews, Shawn (Missy) McNealy and Devin (Miranda) McNealy, both of Columbus; great-nephew, Brady McNealy of Columbus; mother-in-law, Wynona Lienhoop of Columbus; and many Phares cousin.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Norman Funeral Home with Pastor Patrick Galligar officiating. Viewing will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Friday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
