NEW ORLEANS — Barring successful appeals by their would-be challengers, the sheriff and criminal court clerk of New Orleans will return to office without opposition next year.
Marlin Gusman’s only challenger in an Oct. 14 primary was disqualified by a judge.
The New Orleans Advocate reports that the judge disqualified former Deputy Fredrick “Freddy” Brooks for failing to file his state income tax returns for several years.
That means an automatic fourth term for Gusman, who has endured criticism over his slow progress in achieving court-ordered reform at the New Orleans jail.
Criminal District Court Clerk Arthur Morrell’s only opponent also has been knocked out of the race. Danil Faust was disqualified for entering as a Green Party candidate when he was registered as a member of the Democratic Party.
