STOCKBRIDGE, Vt. — Vermont State Police believe a man watching someone cut tree branches was fatally electrocuted after one dropped onto a live power line and he dropped to the ground.

Police say witnesses didn’t see 50-year-old Brendan Smith, of Stockbridge, Vermont, hit by any debris on Monday as he was standing in a yard. However, his body may have been touching some equipment that might have conducted the electricity through his body. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

An autopsy has been scheduled on Smith.
