GRIFTON, N.C. — A North Carolina insurance agent has been arrested for exploiting the elderly and embezzling their money, his third arrest on such charges in the last two years.

The N.C. Department of Insurance said in a news release Tuesday that 59-year-old David Maylon Pickett of Grifton is charged with 11 counts of obtaining property by false pretense and nine counts each of embezzlement and exploitation of an elder.

Pickett is accused of deceiving elderly customers to obtain funds, assets and property, and then converting it for his own use. In May, Pickett was accused of deceiving a Wayne County woman out of nearly $3,000. He also has 33 similar charges pending going back to 2015.

Pickett was jailed on an $890,000 bond. It’s not known if he has an attorney.
