PORTLAND, Ore. — Authorities say divers recovered the body of a man who drowned in Blue Lake east of Portland near the Columbia River.

The man in his 20s and a woman jumped off a paddle boat Monday afternoon after the boat started to fill with water.

Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Brandon White says the two tried to swim back toward the docks, but struggled in the water.

White says a bystander saw them and went into the lake to help.

White says he got the woman to safety, but when he looked back, the man had disappeared under the water.
