JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — The family of a physician who worked in Tennessee for more than 40 years beginning in 1929 has donated some of his belongings to East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine.
Dr. Bill Preas worked until his death in 1970 as a family medicine doctor. His son, psychiatrist Stephen Preas of Atlanta, visited the school recently to donate items such as his father’s medical bag and instruments he carried while making house calls. Stephen Preas says he felt the items belonged in the area where his father spent his life and practiced medicine.
State Sen. Rusty Crowe helped the family get in touch with the university regarding the donation. The elder Dr. Preas was his godfather.
The items will be displayed at The Museum at Mountain Home, where displays show the development of health care in south-central Appalachia.
