MEDINA, Ohio — Authorities say a woman has been killed after a tree fell onto her SUV while driving during a thunderstorm in northeast Ohio.

The woman has been identified as 28-year-old Devon Cook, of Medina. The accident occurred just after 1 p.m. Friday in Medina County’s Montville Township, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of downtown Cleveland. A coroner pronounced her dead at the scene.

A small child in the SUV was taken to a Medina hospital and then transferred to a children’s hospital in Akron. The child’s condition isn’t known.

Montville Township police say Cook died from a “freak and terrible accident.”

Police said the tree didn’t appear to have been struck by lightning but may have been toppled by high winds during the storm.
