FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Authorities in Florida say someone police officers were trying to take into custody has died after a brief struggle.

News outlets report Fort Lauderdale police officers working at an event at Carter Park were alerted to someone who was exhibiting abnormal behavior on Saturday afternoon.

Police spokeswoman Casey Liening says police found the person in the middle of traffic outside the park. At that point, Liening says officers tried to take the person into custody. Police aren’t saying whether the person was a man or a woman until next of kin can be notified.

A struggle ensued, and officers took the person to the hospital.

The Fort Lauderdale police and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating.
