GLASGOW, Ky. — L. Rogers Wells Jr., who served as finance secretary to former Kentucky Gov. Wallace Wilkinson, has died. Wells, a Glasgow businessman, died Sunday at age 79.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that Wells was a key fundraiser in Wilkinson’s campaign. He was finance secretary throughout Wilkinson’s administration from 1987 to 1991.

Wells was chairman of the board and chief executive officer of American Materials Inc. and had been chairman of New Farmers National Bank and the Bowling Green Bank and Trust Company.

He owned companies involved in agriculture, fertilizer, coal, gas, oil, plastics, cable television, engineering, warehousing, construction and real estate development.

He was acquitted in 1995 of a federal charge of participating in a kickback scheme with a lottery executive.
