PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Gas prices are up 8 cents per gallon in Rhode Island, to an average of $2.36 for a gallon of regular unleaded gas.

That’s according to a weekly survey by AAA Northeast on Monday.

The price in Rhode Island is 2 cents per gallon higher than the national average of $2.34.

The average price has risen nearly 11 percent since last year at this time, when gas was averaging 23 cents lower, at $2.13 per gallon.

AAA Northeast’s Lloyd Albert says crude inventories are down in the United States while summer gasoline demand is going up, which pushes prices higher.
